i'm always enamoured by your fantastic use of colour... may i ask a question? do you use any blues for the shadows? that always seems to be my problem in painting -- i mute out a lot of the colours with either whites or blues... D:
Thanks. I try to think in terms of warm and cool. If the light source is cool, the shadows will likely be warm. If the light source is warm, the shadows will likely be cool. I typically go for warm shadows with cool light, but lately I've been experimenting with cool shadows. So yes, I do use blues in my cool shadows. Light usually has a color, so mix towards that color instead of using just white for highlights. Your portraits are very nice. I hope this is helpful.
ah! i never thought to oppose the light source vs the shadow...well now. that kind of gives me a whole new view on how to do portraits! i mean, i went to art school (granted, my work doesn't show it, its pretty much all just for fun since my focus was on small illustrations) but they never really went into too much detail in painting class. ...i do remember the teacher always telling me to stop muting my colours...
also, thank you for the compliment and the suggestions! i really appreciate it.
