Age of Idealism by VampireHungerStrike Age of Idealism by VampireHungerStrike
I wondered what the masters of ideal beauty of the 19th century thought of the Elephant Man. Here I imagine Joseph Merrick as painted by someone like W.A.Bouguereau.

This oil painting measures 18 x 24 inches, and is painted on panel.

This is an amazing concept and so well done! It looks like it was done by one of the old masters :D I think Joseph Merrick really would've liked it :)

I'm imagining this was on one of his trips to Northamptonshire; he was walking picking wildflowers and decided to strip X) I mean this in good humor, I'm laughing at my own stupidity for thinking of it.

This is absolutely beautiful! I must say, however, that I believe his right leg was malformed as well.

Thank you! You're right, of course. I idealized his anatomy a bit. His head is smaller and his physique is stronger. I left that leg unaffected to add a little symmetry and to give a strong leg for the pose.

What an interesting and brilliant concept. It makes for an odd juxtaposition, but the contrast between the truth and the fantasy was pulled off beautifully here. And I think this also speaks volumes about the importance of character, and not just physical beauty. All in all, one of the best paintings I've seen in a while.

Amazing! I really love how you took a genre of art that was all about idealized beauty and rendered an equally beautiful portrait of a wonderful man who clearly did not fit that 'mold' of classical beauty. Very well done!

Wow!! I saw The Elephant Man in Chicago when David Bowie starred in it. I've always been fascinated by this man's story.
